The United Green Movement (UGM) Party recently concluded a powerful and deeply engaging three-day tour of Kwale County from June 23 to 25, 2025. The visit marked a significant moment in UGM’s coastal presence, bringing together youth voices, faith communities, local leaders, and international allies in the spirit of service, solidarity, and grassroots organising for political change.
The heart of the visit was the official launch of the UGM Kwale County Branch Office in Kombani, Matuga Constituency. Senior party officials led by Co-Party Leader Hon. Neto Agostinho, Co-National Women Leader Hon. Catherine Dzame, Co-Youth Leader Binuamin Salat Issak, and NEC members Rebecca Kwekwe, Lilian Lingai, and Sydney Ogada joined Kwale leaders including Hon. Zainab Chitsangi, Hon. Benjamin Munyao, and Hon. Sammy Mwema for the occasion.
The office was officially inaugurated by Chief Justice Emeritus Hon. David Maraga. In his remarks, he praised the party’s values of youth leadership, sustainability, and political integrity. He called for a return to public service that puts citizens first and urged young people to step into leadership roles with courage and principle. The office will now serve as a hub for civic education, community dialogue, and Green policy engagement across the county.
UGM leaders visited Shimoni ward to support Hon. Sammy Mwema Sonko, UGM’s MP aspirant. The team took a walk to the Shimoni port, passing by the historic Shimo la Tewa area. The visit was both symbolic and intentional, reinforcing the party’s commitment to heritage, coastal livelihoods, and economic justice.
Throughout the weekend, faith-based engagement remained central to the party’s itinerary. UGM members joined congregants at Ukunda Central SDA Church, Shimoni SDA church and Catholic Church in Kinango, affirming the party’s deep respect for religious institutions and their role in promoting moral leadership and unity.
The final event of the tour was a public townhall attended by committee members from all 20 wards in the county, with 14 representatives from each ward. The forum offered a safe, honest space for residents to voice their concerns and hopes for change in Kwale County.
Members raised critical issues including youth unemployment, land reform, environmental degradation, education, and water access. In one heartbreaking account, it was reported that girls in some areas face assault while fetching water. These testimonies brought urgency to the conversation.
Various UGM Party leaders including Hon. Zainab Chitsangi, Hon. Benjamin Munyau and Hon. Sammy Mwema represented the Kwale Branch. Members of the NEC Hon. Neto Agostinho, Hon. Catherine Dzame, Hon. Sydney Ogada, Ms. Lilian Lingai, Mr. Binuamin Salat and Hon. Rebecca Kwekwe appealed to the attendants to tirelessly push for change that will drive our county forward. Chief Justice Emeritus Maraga addressed the gathering, speaking candidly about corruption and the theft of public resources, including the situation at the Kenya Ports Authority. UGM leaders pledged to walk with the people in co-creating lasting solutions.
The Kwale County tour was a living expression of UGM’s vision for a just, inclusive, and accountable Kenya. Youth from all 20 wards engaged actively in the process, with support and solidarity from fellow Greens from Mauritius, Rwanda, and Sweden. Their presence added depth to the discussions and reminded everyone that global challenges demand united, local action.
With a new branch office in place, strengthened local structures, and renewed energy, UGM is ready to deepen its reach in Kwale and beyond. Kwale is ready for change, and UGM is here to listen, walk with communities, and lead with integrity.
